The Phantom 12: I was hired to work.
Many physically fit young men who have worked as outdoor labourers have come across older hands like these guys.
Basically it comes down to plain old bullying, singling out the loner, the one who is different. Although, in this case, the shirkers should have chosen someone else to pick on.
